The increase in pressure
ulcers will drive the demand for pressure-relieving devices, such as
therapeutic support surfaces, mattresses and overlays. Previous research shows
that more than 2.5 million Americans are expected to develop this condition
every year..
The
rising prevalence of obesity will also drive the pressure relief devices market
growth. Obese patients are at increased risk of developing pressure ulcers, as
they are required to stay in hospital for longer periods, and have slower
wound-healing times.
Srikanth Venkataraman,
Analyst at GBI Research, says: “As pressure ulcers cause pain and increase the risk of
skin infection, caregivers should focus on protecting patients from high-risk
pressure sores using appropriate prevention strategies. These include
pressure-relieving support surfaces, such as bariatric beds with multiple
functionalities.”
However, the high costs and lack of reimbursement surrounding treatment for
pressure ulcers could prove major restraints for future market growth.
“Treatment is expensive due to long hospitalization periods, slow healing
times, recurring wounds and an increased chance of infection. On top of that,
the US Medicare does not provide reimbursement for the treatment of
hospital-acquired pressure ulcers.” Leading global manufacturers are therefore
focusing on emerging markets, such as India and China, in order to expand their
customer base and sales.
